New Year, New Coffee Trends

Coffee Trends for 2019

Few things in this world are as constant as our need for coffee. Coffee gets us going in the morning and keeps us going throughout the day. And while coffee remains a constant necessity in our lives, each year there are new trends brewing in the coffee industry to keep things interesting.

Coffee for a Younger Audience

The fastest growing group of coffee drinkers is the 13 to 18 year old crowd. These kids love their coffee, but typically prefer a sweeter option, like a coffee shake or flavored latte. Once offered only at large coffee chains, many small coffee shops are adding these sweet treats to their menus to appeal to a younger audience.

Coffee for the On-The-Go Lifestyle

Another trend gaining popularity is ready-to-drink, grab-and-go coffee. These bottled beverages are easy to carry around for those on the go (think young professionals, students, busy parents, etc.). Found at gas station and convenience stores, they eliminate the need for another stop. There are many varieties including sweetened, flavored, nitro and cold brew, so they appeal to the entire spectrum of the coffee-drinking population.

Coffee for Good

Consumers are increasingly more aware of how their coffee is grown. The following labels on your coffee means the coffee was grown in such a way that it is sustainable and/or the workers are treated fairly.

Fair Trade: Coffee grown by workers getting paid fairly for the work they provide.

Bird Friendly: Coffee that is certified by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center as both organic and shade grown.

Organic: Coffee that is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.

Rainforest Alliance: Coffee grown on farms in a way that preserves forests in reserves and along waterways.

Coffee for Every Taste

Coffee is no longer a ‘one size fits all’ drink. You can get anything from a cup of black coffee to a coffee shake, coffee mixed with tea to a coffee cocktail, and everything in between. Here are some drinks that we expect will be popping up everywhere in 2019.

Cold Brew: Coffee that is stronger and less bitter than traditionally brewed coffee. It’s easy to make at home and prepare in large batches as well.

Nitro: This cool trend sounds more science than beverage! It infuses coffee with nitrogen gas, resulting in a rich and creamy texture. Nitro coffee is very strong for all the caffeine junkies out there. Expect to see cans of this in stores if you haven’t already.

Buttered Coffee: Also called Bulletproof coffee, this drink is a mixture of coffee and healthy fats, such as butter or coconut oil. Fans say the fats in the drink keeps them full, aids with weight loss, is Keto friendly, and eliminates ‘brain fog’ and caffeine jitters.

Cascara: This beverage is made from the dried skins of coffee cherries, something that typically is discarded in the coffee process. It tastes more like an herbal tea than coffee and can be served both hot and cold. Cascara may not be in your local coffee shop yet, but quickly gaining popularity.
