Camp Coffee Recipe

We will sacrifice a lot of things while camping, but a good cup of coffee isn’t one of them. Whether you like car camping, RVing, roughing it in a tent, or backpacking, there’s nothing better than a hot cup of coffee while watching the sunrise. Searching for the best camp coffee recipe? Try this delicious Cowboy Coffee recipe next time you find yourself in the great outdoors.

Cowboy Coffee

Cowboy Coffee may be the most popular camp coffee recipe. It’s easy to make and requires very little in the way of supplies, however, it takes some practice to get the taste just right.

You only need 3 ingredients for this java: coffee, water, and fire. You will also need a kettle/camping coffee pot or a saucepan, whatever you have available at your campsite.

First, get your fire going. Next, add water and boil. A good rule of thumb is to use 2 tablespoons of coffee per 8 ounces of water, so measure or eyeball your water accordingly. Once you’ve reached a rolling boil, remove the pot from the fire and let it sit for about 30 seconds – do not add grounds to boiling water! Next stir in the coffee grounds, many people prefer coarser grounds. Let sit for about 2 minutes, stir, and let rest another 2 minutes.

Now for the coffee grounds (we love using Sam and Evan’s). You want them to settle to the bottom of the pot so they stay out of your cup. To do this, either sprinkle a little cold water into the pot, or slightly tilt the pot towards the spout for about 3 minutes. You can see which method works best or use them both for good measure.

The last step requires patience. It’s time to pour your cup of coffee, but you want to do it very slowly so the coffee grounds don’t get stirred up on the bottom. Save the rest of your cowboy coffee in a thermos to keep you fueled for your outdoor adventures.
